How effective is Deep TMS?

In real-life clinical settings, Deep TMS was proven to be effective for 3 out of 4 major depression patients, with a 51% remission rate and 75% response rate.

A peer-reviewed multicenter clinical study found Deep TMS to be a highly effective treatment for OCD, with more than one in three treatment-resistant OCD patients achieving “response”, greatly improving their quality of life.

I have already tried other medications and had poor results – will Deep TMS be any better?

Studies have shown the treatment to be effective for patients with depression, no matter how many medications have been tried or how many medications didn’t work. In fact, Deep TMS is often said to be effective for those with medication-resistant depression.

For those with OCD, studies have shown Deep TMS to be safe and effective for those who could not tolerate or have not achieved satisfactory results from OCD medications or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Has Deep TMS been tested and studied?

Deep TMS has been tested in over 60 clinical studies for various indications in leading institutions all over the world. It is FDA-approved3 for the clinical treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Smoking Addiction. Currently, it’s available in the US, Europe, and South America. Over 15,000 patients have been treated with BrainsWay Deep TMS already.

How does Deep TMS work?

You’ll start each treatment by checking in with your provider. You’ll also be given earplugs so the clicking sound won’t bother you too much. During each session, you’ll sit comfortably on a chair with a cushioned helmet placed over your head. This helmet uses magnetic fields to stimulate the targeted brain area and improve your symptoms of depression. Deep TMS requires daily 18-minute to 20-minute sessions for 4-6 weeks. Because no hospitalization or anesthesia is needed and no memory loss or systemic side effects occur, you can return to your day as normal after each session. No downtime involved.

Does the treatment session cause any discomfort?

Deep TMS is a non-invasive procedure, which eliminates the need for hospitalization. Patients may experience minor side effects such as headaches or minor pain at the site of treatment. However, this is usually brief and ceases after the first few sessions.

Why does APN Lodge have a Deep TMS machine on-site?

APN Lodge believes in breaking down silos and pursuing innovation in addiction and mental health treatment. Our treatment team has studied the research and concluded that because of Deep TMS’s proven ability to treat medication-resistant major depression, the technology would be extremely useful for appropriate residential clients at the Lodge. Clients receiving treatment at the Lodge for addiction or trauma who have co-occurring major depressive disorder or OCD may be good candidates for Deep TMS as an add-on to their treatment regimen. The APN Lodge medical team is available to assess clients.

Because we believe that many dysfunctional patterns (like addiction) are caused by deeper-rooted issues, Deep TMS allows clients to address treatment-resistant major depression or OCD as a part of the work of healing. In addition, we are excited to offer Deep TMS to more than just residential clients as a part of our efforts to bring widespread and lasting recovery from mental illness, trauma, and addiction.

Is Deep TMS helpful for addiction?

Deep TMS was FDA-approved for the treatment of smoking addiction in the summer of 2020. For more information, visit the BrainsWay website. Studies regarding Deep TMS for other types of addiction are still ongoing.
