At All Points North, we offer the athletes that come here for care and environment that understands them and their needs and go out of our way to ensure they’re met. We’ll make all necessary arrangements, from travel to special dietary requirements. We curate care for the athletes who come here to ensure they get exactly what they need for a fast and effective recovery. With our clinical staff and our medical partners, every conceivable option is available, including hyberbaric oxygen therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, specialized physical therapy and every evidence based psychological therapy. If needed, we will also bring in specialists and experts in any field if it will aid our guest’s recovery. All this in an environment of ultra luxury, privacy and a vast array of activities both at and around the Lodge.
Active athletes are far from the only people with skin in their game. Coaches, families, teams, and managers are just a few of the many key players who invest in an athlete. The stress of holding expectations and avoiding disappointment can be crushing. That stress must be tackled, not avoided. For the good of the athlete and all others involved, the health of the athlete’s mind and body is non-negotiable. When mental health disorders, circumstantial struggle, substance abuse, or addiction exist, there is no time to waste. The athlete needs efficient and effective treatment, along with continued physical conditioning.
At All Points North Lodge, we’ve created an athletic track specifically for current and retired professional athletes. The program was created by those who have been there – professional athletes who endured the struggle and came out the other side. They’re paying recovering forward.
Every athlete receives custom and individualized care. No two cases are exactly alike, so no two treatment plans are exactly alike. Every person requires different modalities and therapies, and that’s never truer than with athletes.
Our goal is not merely to help the athlete get “clean”. We do that of course. But more than that, we position each athlete to plow forward, in mental health, physical health, and life in general. After treatment at the APN Lodge campus concludes, we stay in touch. Mental health never stops being a priority. So, we continue working with each athlete, even after the plane ride home.
We begin treatment with an intensive set of assessments, both psychological and physical. This includes a preliminary nursing assessment, including a full blood workup and a complete history and physical (H&P) assessment with one of our doctors. This gives us a window into health, allowing us to assess the body’s condition and prioritize any physical treatments. In a one-on-one interview with an APN Lodge therapist, we also conduct a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment. This gives us an overview of any biological, sociological, or psychological health issues. When substance abuse is present, we check for any obvious origins or attending circumstances. Our nutritional assessment determines the impact of eating habits on physical or mental health issues. Adjusting nutrition as needed enables a faster, more complete recovery.
The need for detox is determined by our clinical healthcare staff on a case by case basis. When detox is indicated, our assessments help us determine what level of care is necessary – acute care (in a hospital setting) or subacute care (provided on site at the Lodge). Detox may last from forty-eight hours to several days, depending on the substances, daily substance consumption, and length of substance use. In some cases, a medication assisted detox (such as a Suboxone taper) may be required to create a more comfortable transition into treatment. Throughout detox, the guest’s vitals are closely monitored until they consistently fall within normal levels. For this reason, activities are limited until the completion of detox. Detox-related symptoms such as nausea, sleeplessness, anxiety, restlessness, and pain may occur during the process. Our detox doctors work closely with guests and other clinical staff to treat these symptoms as needed. It is important that a guest in detox gets as much rest as possible.
Residential Athletic Treatment Plan
Following a review of all preliminary assessments, a treatment plan is developed in collaboration with the athlete guest. This collaboration encourages the guest’s buy-in to the individualized plan and its goals. As the treatment plan unfolds, goals may be adjusted depending on the speed at which they are reached. In total, the treatment plan includes physical/exercise treatment goals, mental health goals, therapy goals, nutrition goals, and the optional use of advantageous APN Lodge amenities such as the pool, gym, tennis courts, golf courses, recreation excursions, and mountain activities.
A successful transition out of in-lodge treatment is a key area of focus during your stay. Walking out of treatment should not mean walking into relapse. Post-treatment, your life will change. To prevent relapse, you must make intentional adjustments to your life, schedule, and mindset. For this reason, we stay in touch. For several months, you will likely participate in at least one tele-therapy session each week until it is no longer necessary. Retired athletes may need to recreate their social circles, place of living, and lifestyle. Whatever you face, you won’t face it alone. During your in-lodge treatment, we work with you to create your custom plan for post-treatment recovery and general health, wellness, and happiness.
